How can I apply to the Cosmetology Program at HCCS?

Contact an instructor in the Cosmetology Department for advisement before beginning the advisement process. Due to requirements of the Texas Cosmetology Commission regarding number of students enroll in a class, students may not go through the registration process without first obtaining department approval.

What courses does the Cosmetology Program offer?  

HCCS Cosmetology Program offers an Associate of Applied Science or Certificate in the Cosmetology Operator course and the Cosmetology Instructor course. We also have certificate programs in Facial Specialist, Manicure Specialist, and Salon Manager.

What are the prerequisites for entry into the program?

  1. Be at least 17 years of age
  2. Proof of high school diploma or GED
  3. Take the ASSET, COMPAS or TASP exan
  4. Provide an official copy of the TDRL Trancript of Hours (if transfering from another cosmetology school)
  5. Due to the TDRL requiement limiting the number of students per instructor at each location, all students enrolling in the cosmetology program must have department approval before registering in any cosmetology course. Student may not go through the college registration process without first obtaining specific instructor approval.

How long is the program?

The operator course is 1500 clock hours. This course can be completed in three semesters for a student attending full-time classes. The manicure and facial specialist programs are 600 clock hours each. The course can be completed in two semesters. The cosmetology instructor course is 750 clock hours and can be completed in two full-time semesters.

Do I have to take an entrance exam or pass TASP?

New students wanting an Associate of Applied Science must take the TASP test.  Students applying for a certificate are TASP exempt.

What does tuition include and what does it not include?

The tuition includes hours of instruction as well as college fees.  It does not include books, kit and tools or uniforms.

Is there a uniform requirement for Cosmetology?

Students in the operator program are required to wear

  1. black slacks or skirt
  2. white shirt or blouse,w/ collar
  3. black nursing type shoes with rubber soles (no open toes or sandals)
  4. hosiery
  5. black lab coat

Students in the specialty classes must wear

When is tuition due?

During early registration, tuition is due by the date announced in the course schedule.  During regular registration period, payment is due by the end of the day on which the student registers.

What type of payment do you accept?

Houston Community College accepts most forms of payment: cash, checks, credit  cars (Master Card, VISA or American Express).  Students may also qualify to pay by installment.

Where are Cosmetology Classes at Houston Community College?

Cosmetology classes are currently offered at the following locations: Westgate Center (Northwest), Northline Mall (Northeast) and Central Campus.

When do classes begin and end?

Beginning and ending dates are included in the official academic calendar published each semester online.
